Dream
I dream sometimes
Princesses who become Queens and Dragons
But want to be knights.
Of rabbit holes and talking moles
And fairy statues and china dolls
There is a knight
Who helped the princess
Learn to fight
But the knight was slain,
The ground he stood upon
Littered with forgotten games,
And promises never kept.
I dream sometimes
Fighting, tooth and claw
Hand and nail
Biting and screaming
Wild, wild child
Who wanted to be a hero
Who fought like the cat
But was as soft as silk.
I dream sometimes
Great gates, great castles,
A hundred pale faces
A hundred strange places
Of reading, reading, escape,
Too late, took the bait,
Now must resign to selected fate
I dream of smashed bottles, thudding doors
Cracked apart and tear stained floors.
Haunted eyes, dreaming restarts
Battle scars and hardened heart
I don’t dream.
